Julie Dunbabin

School Lunch Project Manager, School Food Matters

Julie has worked at School Food Matters as Executive Officer – a not for profit, non-government, health promotion organisation for the past eleven years and for the past 12 months has moved into the role of School Lunch Project Manager.

In 2019 a Churchill Fellowship enabled Julie to visit the UK, France, Italy, Finland, Japan, USA, to ‘investigate factors that enable school lunch programs to impact positively on student health and wellbeing’

Julie observed many factors that enabled school lunch programs to impact positively on student health and wellbeing ranging from all children being fed to children sitting down to eat with a dedicated time of at least 20 mins to food being observed as food groups and not as nutrients.

Tasmanian Government funding to expand a small feasibility school lunch study in three schools in 2020, is currently operating in 15 schools across the state. Local and seasonal produce is being utilised. Partnerships across a range of govt and non govt organisations is fundamental.

Julie will be speaking at Conversations in the City, in the “Plate” stream – Food Justice.
